Born in a progressive,
culturally aware family Atreyee Roy is brought up in an atmosphere
rich in traditional values. She was very fortunate to be initiated to
her dance lessons as a tiny tot by her illustrious Guru Padmashree
Shovana Narayan.
As Atreyee grew up, she has won prizes and awards galore at every level – be it inter-school, inter-college, state-level or any other open competition in and out of Delhi, and she has always been on the top.
A recipient of Central Government Scholarship in the field of Classical Dance, she also bagged the Best Child Dancer Award by the All India Critics’ Association.
Apart from winning prizes and awards, Atreyee has featured in almost all of her Guru’s choreographies, mostly in pivotal roles. To name a few are Sanmati, Mohan and Rambha, Sadhu and the Sage, Khag Udte Rehna, Krishna Leela, Satya Ki Khoj, Toota Yeh Vishwas kyon, Women in Love, Moonlight Impressionism, Bhav Darpan, Wichre Paani, Mera Safar, Ashtanaayika etc.
She has traveled extensively (for solo performances as well as with her Guru), giving performances in all major cities (Allahabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Dhanbad, kolkata, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Pune, Raigarh, Ujjain) in India & also in U.K. (London and Hull). She has also participated in many prestigious festivals all over India, like Pune Festival, Raigarh Chakradhar Samaroh, Kathak Mahotsava, Yuva Mahotsava, Swatantrata Samaroh etc. She was invited by the Indian Ambassador to Hungary, to give a solo performance in Budapest in order to raise funds for Mother Teressa Homes in Hungary,which won her high praises from the first lady of Hungary. Atreyee also featured in a short film “Rhythms of India” made for the Hanover Fair,2000, Germany.
In India, she has given solo recitals under the aegis of Sangeet Natak Akademy (Nritya-Pratibha), "Arpan", Sahitya Kala Parishad, Kathak Kendra (Saracchandrika), Asavari, India Habitat Centre, India International Centre, Pracheen Kala Kendra(Chandigarh), Durga Puja Samiti and quite a few times on Delhi Doordarshan, which were highly acclaimed by the public and critics alike. Her delicate nuances of Kathak repertoire and flawless renditions of Rhythmic pieces have always been appreciated by the audience by and large.
Atreyee is a gifted dancer endowed with natural charm, grace, and an inimitable innocence, which make her performance a delight to watch. Her forte is her solid Tayyari, Layakari, powerful footwork lightning chakkars, graceful movements and spontaneity. She has been nicknamed as a “Vivacious Dancer” & a "Potential 'Star on the horizon'" (Leela Venkataraman), “Potential Storehouse of Talent” (Subbudu) & “Star Material” (Ashish Khokar) by renowned critics in the field of dance. She has also been compared by an eminent critic with the queen of Kathak Sitara Devi for her energy, charming Saswati sen for her looks and fire brand Numero Uno danseuse Shovana Narayan for her dance form (Ashish Khokar).
At the threshold of her dance career, Atreyee has accomplished a feat which many others thrive lifelong to achieve.
Other than being an excellent dancer, Atreyee Roy, a 1st class graduate in Mass Communication, works full-time with the media industry.
